Good to hear this again - lots of scratched copies around back in the day. There are several other interesting Irish compilation LPs around, like The Tara Records samplers "High Kings of Tara" and "The Irish Folk Collection", Polydor's "A Feast of Irish Folk" and "Live For Ireland" from the 1986 festival.

They are all long out of print, so could anybody out there post them?

Thanks again,

Joe in Dublin.

Wow! I bought this in cassette format on a trip through Ireland in 1986, and one of the saddest days of my young life was about 5 years later, when the tape got eaten in a cheap car stereo. Thanks for allowing for this unexpected reunion - I've missed this compilation terribly over the years!

Lizardson, if you remove every recording that is still "in copyright" you will not have a blog. Every single recording is still "in copyright" back to 1925 (although the copyright is not always owned by the artist). Posts should only be removed if they are still for commercially available in some format, with proceeds going to the artist. If they are long out of print, then there is no problem.

Ratato is right, but also wrong.

"Posts should only be removed if they are still for commercially available in some format, with proceeds going to the artist. If they are long out of print, then there is no problem."

What law says that? Copyright law says don't copy. If what we all do with blogs was legal, nothing could be deleted and no blog removed.

For this person to suggest that an album is fair game once it's out of print, is his opinion but it's not any kind of law.

EVERY album is COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE. Just because it's out of print, that doesn't mean you can't find it on Amazon, on GEMM, on eBay, or in a record store.

If you had to sell your vinyl in an emergency, wouldn't you like to know a record store would buy them from you, or you could sell them on line? Don't record dealers have rights? What's more important, us having everything free, or people staying off unemployment?

Making mp3 files out of copyrighted material is certainly not legal. It also can prevent albums from getting back in print because the more they are free on blogs the less likely an indie re-issue label will want to invest in getting the master and digitizing.

But a lot of blogs are not doing much harm if they stick with the main reason for doing it...turning people on to deserving artists.

Common sense should prevail. It could be posting in a low bit-rate of 160 or 192. It could be posting vinyl that's in VG condition so people might want to buy a mint copy if they really like it. It could be posting only a few tracks, etc.

Common sense should also tell us that not every artist or their rep can take the time to send an e-mail and beg a blogger to remove an item, and hope the blogger doesn't consider it a load of crap from a mere fan or "Troll."

I think in this case, most people who download would be ones who have no idea about Christy Moore, or would not pay a huge sum unless they knew it was worth buying. It's not an easy decision how to handle somebody else's creative work, if at all. The fact that somebody made a comment and you acted to remove this particular item is commendable.

So thanks, Lizardman, because you do care, and your blog is a caring one, and you do try to see all sides of this issue. It's not a simple one, since while a majority of artists want control of their work, some, especially the ones on this blog, would be glad to be remembered.

I would've liked to hear it, but I respect your decision to remove the link, and the person who made the request.

It should be obvious that no law says: "Posts should only be removed if they are still commercially available in some format, with proceeds going to the artist. If they are long out of print then there is no problem." That is simply the rule for this blog. And I for one think it's a pretty good rule.

I certainly don't respect the person who asked for the link to be removed, since he or she sounded a bit 'holier than thou' which always gets up my nose, and also because his/her logic was rather skewed. If that person wants everything which is under copyright removed, why didn't they ask for every single post on this blog to be removed? Because you can bet your left ventricle that most of them are still 'under copyright.'

Neither do I respect anonymous's 'Ratato is right, but also wrong' rant because, though it adheres to the law, it is so wishy-washy and, frankly, pompous, that I want to squirt water at whoever said it.

I mean, really. How poncy can someone get with their: ''I would've liked to hear it, but I respect your decision to remove the link, and the person who made the request.'

Be firm. Decide what it is you think is fair and stick to it. Otherwise, you are simply leaving it to others to decide your views.

Mine are very simple. I have, on many occasions, complained that folk artists are being deprived of their earnings due to people posting current albums (Vin Garbutt, for example) on this site. In the end Lizardson agreed and deleted those posts. Good for him, I say. But when it comes to old, long deleted, hard to get, wonderful albums, then I am always delighted to see them here and I download them like a shot. If you disagree, then say so. But don't post all that 'I would have loved to hear it but I respect you for not allowing me' bullshit.

I mean, really, fuck you.

Lots of love,
Manila
