The Walkabouts

The walkabouts are a band originated from Seattle. They started on the same label as bands as Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana and other grunge bands: Subpop. But apart of sharing the label the Walkabouts had almost nothing in common with the grunge scene. The music was based in the folk and country music, which came very visible with their full covers album Satisfied Mind. Two albums a year was normal during the 1990's. Qualtity is not always quality but in the case of the Walkabouts quantity and quality went hand in hand.

I remember the Walkabout playing in a very small venue in Amsterdam: The Sleep Inn. Most of the audience had come for the opening act, the Dutch band De Russen. When they had finished their set, most of the audience went and only a handful people saw what I saw at 2am in the morning: a hard working 5 piece band playing their souls out with two magnificent covers that morning in 1990: Dylans Maggie's Farm and a blistering version of Neil Young's On the Beach.

During the next years I saw the band regularly live and whatever they released, on the German label Glitterhouse, I bought. Apart of the official releases the band also released several mailorder only albuims such as this Live in Bruxelles, a limited release of 1000 (I think) of a show in Brussels Belgium with the Nighttown Orchestra. Later I learned there was a Yahoo group releasing cdr's with acknowledgment of Chris Eckman (singer songwriter of the band). Presented here is one of them: Orange Blossom Special 10, a 17 song set from 2006. I hope you will enjoy them.(art work included in the rar file as pdf) Orange Blossom Special contains Townes van Zandt's Snake Mountain Blues.

I have several more of those mailorder only cd's, which I will upload in the coming up days.

Pearl Jam was never on the Sub Pop label.

That is all.
