"Matthews' Southern Comfort" 1970
This is a transitional album for Matthews. Having recently exited Fairport Convention, this record pays tribute to that period of his career in both material ("A Castle Far") and in the choice of musicians who back him (many of them from Fairport Convention). At the same time, songs like "A Commercial Proposition" indicate where Matthews is headed on 1971's Later That Same Year. ~ Jim Worbois, All Music Guide

"Second Spring" 1970
With this album, Matthews' Southern Comfort is a real band and, in addition to Matthews, also includes Roger Swallow (ex-Marmalade) and Marc Griffiths (ex-Spooky Tooth). Though there is really nothing that makes this a memorable record, it's still quite a nice record overall. If you already know his work on Elektra, Mooncrest, or even Later That Same Year, it would be well worth your while to search this record out. ~ Jim Worbois, All Music Guide
Ian Matthews - vocal
Carl Barnwell - guitar
Mark Griffiths - lead guitar
Andy Leigh - bass
Ray Duffy - drums
Gordon Huntley - steel guitar
Tom Paley - banjo on "Ballad of Obray Ramsey"
Roger Churchyard - fiddle on "Jinkson Johnson" & "Southern comfort"
Martin Jenkins - mandolin on "Southern comfort"

ReplyDeletei saw a live clip of matthew's southern comfort that blew me away...i think it was called my front pages (a take on my back pages) and while it was totally beautiful english/byrds style (perfect matthews) it wasn't the dylan song...it was simply amazing. anyone know where it's been recorded on lp? either live or studio?
ReplyDeleteSomeone asked about the "My Front Pages" cover by Matthews Southern Comfort. This is a song by Arlo Guthrie, I think from his _Running Down the Road_ album, or the one before that. Maybe it's a response to the Dylan "My Back Pages," I don't know. The lyrics don't make a lot of sense. But it's a gorgeous melody, and MSC does a terrific job. Which you can find on YouTube. But the poster misspelled "Matthews" as "Mathews" and there's also a posting of MSC's performance of Sylvia Tyson's "Southern Comfort."
ReplyDeleteHi I'm Dave, born in 1971 and still loving the music of the late sixties early seventies. Thx for these two albums,it means a lot to me.
